St. John, Farniok making strides for OU

OU's question mark at offensive line is a big one, but Josiah St. John and Derek Farniok could be the answers.

Oklahoma fans are incredibly excited about the future of the OU offense under first-year offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

They would be even more excited if they knew how the offensive line is going to come together. The Sooners lost four seniors from 2014 with two of them, Daryl Williams and Tyrus Thompson, both getting selected in the NFL Draft in the spring.

Who’s next man up?

“The tackle positions, the guys that really came out of spring that did a really good job that are older guys that have been playing for us for a few years now,” OU coach Bob Stoops said. “Josiah St. John and Derek Farniok are the guys that we’re really excited about what they’re doing, the way they’ve progressed in the weight room, but also the way they played in the spring.

“Again, they’re guys that have played now for a few years, and it’s now time for them to step up and play consistently.”

It’s the consistency part that will key to watch heading into camp. OU needs Farniok and St. John to emerge or else it could be in the hands of a couple redshirt freshmen with Kenyon Frison and Orlando Brown.

It seems like it’s obvious Brown and Frison are the future for OU. The question is going to be whether or not they’re the present as well.

Have St. John and Farniok improved so much, or are the young guys just not quite there yet? We’ll find out during camp and into the season.
