For the quarterbacks, though, it’s a lot different perspective. It’s not a showdown between the two of them. It’s about making everybody better.
“It’s not a me against you type of thing,” Knight said. “It’s us – we’re going to make each other the best players we can be.
“All three of us are going to be needed in some capacity. We all have to be ready, have to be prepared to be the best unit we can be. We’re a unit first and foremost.”
One thing OU does have going for itself is Knight, Mayfield and Cody Thomas all have experience starting conference games so there is confidence in all three of them. They’ve all won at this level.
It felt strange for Knight to be at media days and be asked one Mayfield question after another, but he took it in stride.
“He’s a guy that’s going to make you better,” Knight said. “There’s a natural spark about him on the field. Guys want to play for him and with him. I don’t know, he has that ‘it’ factor, and he’s certainly a competitor.”
Stoops said it’s a tight battle between Knight and Mayfield with Cody Thomas on their heels and also mentioned how Mayfield will be 100 percent ready to roll for camp to answer any questions about how Mayfield’s shoulder is right now.
