With the season just around the corner, Sooners Illustrated is going to take a shot at guessing who will be the 11 players who make the biggest impact for Oklahoma in the 2015 season.
This version of the OU 11 is not based on how important they are to the team, but instead is based on what their projected production will be in the eyes of publisher Bob Przybylo.
Each weekday we'll be counting them down. Without further ado, the OU 11: Best performers.
No. 8 QB Baker Mayfield
Once again this is Sooners Illustrated coming out and saying for OU to be successful that Mayfield has to be the guy that wins the job.
Mayfield just seems to have that “it” factor that is so necessary as a quarterback and in being a leader of the team.
Trevor Knight is a fantastic leader and ambassador for the university, but there is a disconnect between what he does on the practice field compared to what he delivers in a game setting.
Mayfield should earn his chance this season and needs to make sure he takes advantage of every second of it. On paper, he feels like the more accurate passer and a more natural passer.
He’s not afraid to trust his teammates to make a big-time grab in traffic, and he’s willing to roll the dice. He’ll have to learn how to strike the balance between being a gunslinger and being careless, and it will no doubt be a process for him.
The good news is Mayfield won’t have to do it all on his own. With quality running backs and dynamic receivers to throw the ball to, OU isn’t hurting in the skill positions this season.
