With the season just around the corner, Sooners Illustrated is going to take a shot at guessing who will be the 11 players who make the biggest impact for Oklahoma in the 2015 season.
This version of the OU 11 is not based on how important they are to the team, but instead is based on what their projected production will be in the eyes of publisher Bob Przybylo.
Each weekday we'll be counting them down. Without further ado, the OU 11: Best performers.
No. 3 CB Zack Sanchez
It’s crazy to think Sanchez is actually only a redshirt junior. He’s so ingrained into everything OU has done in the last couple of years and especially for this season, that it feels like he has to be a senior by now.
But he’s not. The hope is that with the help of first-year defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks, Sanchez won’t need that senior season. He will have sparkled so much on the field in 2015 that the NFL Draft will be calling him with open arms.
That’s the hope and that needs to be the reality if OU is going to make noise this season. Sanchez is the unquestioned leader of the secondary, no doubt about that.
There were times, though, where Sanchez wasn’t always in the right spot last year, and he’ll need to make that proverbial leap from being a very good player (which he is) to being a great player.
The secondary is becoming a mirror image of his personality. His focus he is showing in all the little things is making an impact with the rest of the guys, especially the younger ones.
Sanchez was a dynamic playmaker during the first part of last season. He’ll have to find that groove once again and be the guy for OU’s secondary.
