Knight, Thomas show class as back-ups

Sooners quarterback duo remain stalwart despite losing starting job

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops called each of his three quarterbacks who were battling for a starting spot to his side Monday.

He spoke with each of them individually but had good news for just one.

Baker Mayfield was named the Sooners’ starting quarterback while incumbent Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas – both of whom started more than one game last season – lined up behind him on the depth chart. Knight will be the back-up, and Thomas will serve as third string.

The two players who lost the race handled it well, Stoops said.

“As you’d expect, class, character guys that understand,” Stoops said. “And they know they’re going to continue to work and compete and try and get better. They’ll be ready if the teams needs them. They’ve handled it well. Though, I know internally that’s always tough.

“But they’re character guys and handled it professionally.”

A charismatic Mayfield met with the media after practice Monday – for the first time without Knight and Thomas sharing the spotlight.

“Unlike other positions, it’s just a little bit unique and it’s the individual part of it, there’s only one guy, and only one guy plays it,” Stoops said. “So a little bit different than some of the other spots.”
