OU needs to create more turnovers

Sooners set for battle with nation's best turnover producer needing to hold on to the ball

Oklahoma can’t get much lower when it comes to turnover margin. At minus-4, the Sooners are last in the Big 12 Conference and rank 117th in the nation.

The Sooners have the worst turnover margin of any unbeaten team and are only one forced turnover from the bottom of the nation – only Troy and Wyoming have created fewer turnovers.

Meanwhile, West Virginia (3-0) has the best turnover margin in the country (plus-9).

“We preach winning the battle of turnovers,” Oklahoma defensive back Steven Parker. “We know we need to get a lot more, especially for us to be successful for the next couple weeks.

“That’s something we’ve all kind of talked about. It’s not really about talking, it’s about putting it in action. In practice, we preach on it. We harp on it. We’ve got to do it.”

Oklahoma (3-0) has been on the verge of a far better turnover margin with nearly three forced turnovers against Tennessee that wound up as near-misses.

It’s more about protecting the ball than taking it away.

“When we have the football, we need to protect it and keep it,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said.
