Every Monday afternoon during the football season, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops holds a weekly press conference. Sooners Illustrated is there for all of them and gives you the three biggest things from the event.
Game No. 8: at Kansas
Take No. 1: Injury report not looking good
Other schools have been hit hard by injuries, and it feels like OU might be going through its bad stretch right now. Especially on defense where as many as three starters could miss the game against the Jayhawks.
One is guaranteed as cornerback Zack Sanchez is going to miss the game with his sprained ankle, Stoops said. The hope is to have Sanchez back for Iowa State, but it sure feels more likely for him to be ready to roll for Baylor.
The other two are in the same status as they were last week, it’s wait-and-see mode regarding linebackers Devante Bond and Jordan Evans.
Bond did practice last week, and Evans is expected to practice this week. The key will be the same thing it was last week. If they can explode off the ball and play like how they know, they’ll be out there. If they’re still hesitant or hobbled, they won’t.
Really doesn’t feel like it will factor into much, especially if Dakota Austin, P.L. Lindley and Frank Shannon can duplicate what they did vs. Texas Tech.
Take No. 2: Running game wrinkles
The improvement with the offensive line has been a big part for OU’s running success the last two weeks. The group is gaining more confidence and building chemistry.
But there have also been some other factors to it as well. Fullback Dimitri Flowers seems to have really found his niche and has delivered some of his best blocks of the season the last couple of weeks.
Another wrinkle has been the addition of Sam Grant as a blocking tight end, especially when OU gets down around the goal line.
Grant has tinkered with playing tackle and tight end throughout his OU career and has certainly help pave some of those holes for OU’s backs in the last two games.
Take No. 3: Mixon will not address media just yet
Redshirt freshman running back Joe Mixon made his first public comments since being at OU on Sunday night on Bob Stoops’ recap show.
Stoops said he made the decision because he was asked who should be on the show, and he didn’t see the point of having just Samaje Perine and not Mixon as well.
Mixon spoke highly of playing with Perine and how they feed off each other. As for a usual interview with the local media, Stoops said that won’t happen anytime soon with Mixon.
“Not ready for that yet,” Stoops said.
Mixon is coming off his career-best outing to this point with 154 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the win vs. Tech.
