Never a dull week on the trail, especially as now three months away from signing day. So let’s get right to it with another Oklahoma recruiting mailbag.
With Maurice Chandler no longer part of the class, who gets that spot? Will there be two more defensive backs?
The second part of the question is the intriguing one in my eyes. You know the Sooners will add one more cornerback to this class, but the issue here is whether or not a second one is going to come along as well.
It feels like the door just opened for Suwanee (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge cornerback Baylen Buchanan to become a member of the Sooners class. Defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks has liked Buchanan for a long time, and Buchanan had a great trip to Norman last month.
The wild card continues to be Southlake Carroll (Texas) High cornerback Obi Eboh. Still committed to Texas, this weekend might be one to circle. 2017 Southlake Carroll safety Robert Barnes, who is pledged to OU, is going to return to Norman this weekend since it’s a night game.
If Eboh arrives with him, could be a sign of things to come. My gut feeling remains the same that OU is just not going to be able to make up the room necessary to land Gardena (Calif.) Serra safety Brandon Burton. Burton and Eboh appear to be automatic takes for OU, while Buchanan might have to see what Eboh and Burton decide first before he knows his future with OU.
Another week, another coaching move. Frank Beamer is resigning at the end of this season, should the Sooners look at any of their commitments?
My stance here hasn’t changed from last week with Miami. OU has enough viable targets among the kids it has already been recruiting that it seems foolish to try to get in the door with recruits it knows nothing about.
And once you factor in who the commitments are right now for the Hokies, it’s best to just stay away. There isn’t that eye-popping recruit that would justify working diligently to try to flip someone. Not saying the recruits are terrible, but they already have a home and Norman doesn’t need to be part of those plans.
The poach factor should come in at offensive line, but there hasn’t been a lineman or two you can circle for Bill Bedenbaugh to try to snag from another school with coaching uncertainty.
Is OU out for the Scout 100 wide receivers (Tyrie Cleveland, Tren’Davian Dickson, Devin Duvernay)?
That has been my mentality all along and do believe that will be the case. Disappointing, for sure, but never felt like OU was making real headway with any of them.
Got all three to campus for official visits, which is nice, but you never felt like the Sooners had turned the corner and had those guys fired up about coming to Norman.
Cleveland and Duvernay seem to be the two that are for sure longshots. Never know with Dickson just because of the fact Texas’ offense has looked so terrible at times this season and is coming off a 24-0 loss to Iowa State.
OU obviously made that adjustment with offers to Saraland (Ala.) High wide receiver Velus Jones, who is already committed to USC as well as Goodman (Miss.) Holmes CC receiver Dre Massey. Trinity Valley CC wide receiver Derrick Willies, committed to Texas Tech, is visiting this weekend after getting the offer.
Massey was an interesting case of a recruit announcing his official visit before even getting an offer. He was offered Sunday and will visit TCU weekend.
