The recruiting week could have been one to remember for Oklahoma but things sort of fizzled out in recent days. All is well that ends well, and it couldn’t have concluded any better for the Sooners than Friday night.
Euless (Texas) Trinity four-star defensive tackle Chris Daniels announced Friday evening he has indeed committed to the Sooners.
Daniels, ranked No. 113 in the Scout 300 and No. 14 at defensive tackle, wanted to wait until his birthday to make his announcement and did just that Friday.
Getting Daniels is huge for OU only because the Sooners were in a real fight the entire time and never stopped plugging away. There were times early in his recruitment where it looked like Texas A&M was going to be the choice.
Then as his senior season began, Michigan made a strong push and the Wolverines were certainly legitimate contenders.
Even this week saw a curveball as almost out of nowhere, Texas offered Daniels on Thursday afternoon to try to make him rethink things.
Through it all, the Sooners have been there. Daniels visited for junior day and then made an unofficial visit with his father during the spring. The family returned to Norman for an official visit last month, and that’s where it felt finally for the first time OU had started to separate itself from the rest of the pack.
Adding Daniels is one heck of a way for first-year defensive line coach Diron Reynolds to begin things on the trail. OU fans had been waiting for Reynolds to secure a commitment for the 2016 class. Not only did he do that, but Daniels is now the top-ranked OU commit as of this moment.
Daniels picked the Sooners over Michigan and Alabama and his top five was OU, A&M, Michigan, Alabama and Ohio State.
He is a pure defensive tackle who had an incredible senior season for Euless Trinity despite being unexpectedly knocked out in the first round of state playoffs.
Daniels marks the third uncommitted official visitor from TCU weekend to pledge to the Sooners, joining Durham (N.C.) Hillside Scout 300 running back Abdul Adams and El Dorado (Kan.) Butler CC Scout Juco 100 offensive guard Ben Powers, who signed Wednesday.
With Daniels onboard, the Sooners now stand at 14 commits for the 2015 class and cap off a crazy week full of potential commits delaying their announcements.
There was no delay here as Reynolds, Sooners after a long process got their man in Daniels.
And for what it's worth, Daniels announced his decision via birthday cake:
