Enjoy the holiday break and able to get a feel of everything that is going on with Oklahoma recruiting? Good, now throw it all out the window as we hit the stretch run of the Sooners finishing out their 2016 class.
OK, that’s a bit of hyperbole as OU is faring pretty well in the final three weeks before signing day, but there will definitely be surprises along the way.
The Sooners are at 15 commits for the 2016 class with the logic being the whole time of eventually ending up with 21-23 commits. Sooners Illustrated has said 22 for months, but there’s definitely some wiggle room.
The dead period ends Wednesday, which means anything goes from Thursday on. With OU in such good standing with various top targets, don’t expect too many head-scratching moments. And any of them that actually come should be good ones as OU continues to pursue some Scout 100 prospects.
There are three visit weekends left before signing day, and OU definitely will try to take advantage of it. As of now, the Sooners have at least one prospect scheduled for each weekend. Names will be added as we get closer, but here’s who’s confirmed.
Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer OT E.J. Price
Houston Langham Creek WR Quartney Davis
Scranton (Pa.) Lackawanna CC OLB Kapri Doucet
Cibolo (Texas) Steele DE/OLB Mark Jackson
Price has tried a couple of times of setting up a visit to Norman, but it feels like the third time might be the charm here. Davis, a former Texas A&M commit, will get to visit Norman in time when former Aggie quarterback Kyler Murray will officially be a part of the Sooners.
Doucet is OU’s most recent 2016 offer, and it’s clear after his decommitment from Arizona last week that OU is all-in with trying to get Doucet to be a Sooner. He’s also from the same school as signee Ashton Julious.
Jackson could be your January/February surprise. Committed to Texas A&M since May 30, the Sooners are going to get their crack the final weekend before signing day.
OU has been perfect the last two years with every single official visitor ending up signing with the Sooners if they showed up on the final weekend.
Last year it was wide receivers A.D. Miller and Dahu Green, linebacker Arthur McGinnis and safety Prentice McKinney.
So it could be saying something with OU saving Jackson for that final visit weekend. He’ll also visit Texas this weekend.
This class does feel awfully reminiscent of OU’s 2014 class where there wasn’t a lot of movement in terms of offers and visits in the final few weeks.
Instead, it became about sealing the deal after all the months of building the relationships with the recruits, their families, their coaches.
Top targets like Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West linebacker Caleb Kelly, OKC John Marshall offensive tackle Tramonda Moore, Lawrence (Kan.) High defensive lineman Amani Bledsoe, Saraland (Ala.) High wide receiver Velus Jones have already made their trip to Norman.
The Sooners have already made their impression. Following a great regular season and absolutely no uncertainty regarding the coaching positions, OU is poised for another strong close so, once again, just buckle up and enjoy the ride.
