OG JohnCarlo Valentin commits to Sooners

OU's first strike after the dead period is a big one with three-star offensive guard JohnCarlo Valentin.

The first day following the dead period, and Oklahoma is already adding some #OUDNA to its 2016 class with a big pickup Thursday afternoon.

Philadelphia Imhotep Charter offensive guard JohnCarlo Valentin announced via Twitter he has committed to the Sooners.

Valentin, ranked the No. 45 offensive guard, visited the Sooners way back when in September when he took his official visit for the Akron game.

It was a great visit but nothing to suggest he was headed to Norman. He listed a top 10 over the holidays, and OU easily made the cut. But conventional wisdom was Valentin was going to have a busy January before anything was decided.

Late Wednesday evening Valentin even tweeted about his official visits and how he still had time to take some and figure things out. That all changed in a hurry.

OU made Valentin a No. 1 priority out of this break and once again was able to strike it big in the east coast.

Valentin, who is 6-foot-4 and 320 pounds, was also considering schools such as Temple, Arizona State, Pittsburgh, among a lot of other choices. OU didn't even factor in with Valentin until The Opening when he got to know former OU offensive lineman Trent Williams. Then things got rolling from there.

He is OU’s fourth offensive line commitment for the class and is the only one (so far) who won’t be a mid-year enrollee for the Sooners. Fellow guard Logan Roberson arrived in Norman on Thursday as did junior college linemen Ashton Julious and Ben Powers.

Valentin is OU’s 16th pledge for the 2016 class, and one heck of a way to start what should be a crazy few weeks until signing day for the Sooners.
