The casual Oklahoma fan has no idea who Courtney “Chip” Viney is and why him staying with the program is so important.
But those that cover recruiting? Yea, they get it. Head coach Bob Stoops announced Wednesday that Viney will be sticking with the Sooners even though his time as a graduate assistant has come to a close.
“Courtney has been a great person for us, a great recruiter.” Stoops said. “He has a bright future, really does. He’s a great communicator and an excellent coach.”
Viney will move from being a graduate assistant to a full-time spot as special teams quality control coach and a bigger role in recruiting. What that role will be is yet to be determined, but he is 100 percent the right man for the job.
Since arriving at OU as a GA, Viney has become perhaps the most important cog of OU’s recruiting machine. Keeping him in Norman is one way for the Sooners to continue to build on that recruiting momentum.
Former special teams quality control coach C.J. Ah You accepted a job as Vanderbilt’s defensive line coach last month.
