You know things are going well when the surprise element of a junior day is that a recruit didn’t commit to the school. That was the case two weeks ago for Oklahoma and Cedar Hill (Texas) High wide receiver Charleston Rambo.
Rambo, ranked No. 107 in the Scout 300, was back in Norman for OU’s first junior day and just about everybody thought if there was a commitment from the event, it would be Rambo.
As it turned out it was McKinney (Texas) Boyd offensive guard Tyrese Robinson who made the leap but that doesn’t mean Rambo won’t as time goes on.
“I loved it,” Rambo said. “I love the coaching staff. It was a small group, just a group of kids that all had offers. I enjoyed it a lot, and my stepdad enjoyed it.”
Rambo said he was getting ready for a big junior day and was a little surprised at just how small it really was. That’s not a bad thing, he said, because it definitely led to a lot more one-on-one time with the coaches and the players.
He said one of the highlights was getting a chance to talk with quarterback Baker Mayfield, whose presence was everywhere at the event.
OU has been in pursuit of Rambo for a while now, ever since a solid showing at one of OU’s satellite camps in the Dallas area last June. He said his two primary contacts are Jay Boulware and Dennis Simmons, and he has developed a good initial bond with each of them.
Rambo said he’s not too sure about future plans. He would like to attend an SMU junior day, but he has his sights set on Florida as he said he really wants to see Miami and Florida State.
The recruiting process certainly hasn’t slowed down for Rambo, who has been picking up one major offer after another during the last month. Rambo said he liked being around all the OU commitments at junior day, but he’s going to wait just a little longer.
“I want to make sure it’s the right choice and take everything in,” Rambo said. “I love the love they’re showing right now.”
Rambo, of course, is one of several top prospects from Cedar Hill for the 2017 class. He said they’ve been talking about perhaps all being committed before the start of their senior season. Rambo is not sure exactly how things will play out. For now, he’s just focusing on getting better and preparing for being a leader as senior.
But as you know, never can tell in recruiting as Rambo is expected to return to OU this weekend once again.
