You’d have to be living under a rock to not notice the start by Oklahoma for the 2017 class. The Sooners, traditionally slow starters, are ranked No. 2 by Scout.
It’s clear OU commits are working hard to guarantee a top class for 2017, but their efforts are spilling into the 2018 group as well.
One of those top targets is Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian Academy cornerback Verone McKinley. Offered by OU last summer, it’s obvious the Sooners have been and will be eyeing McKinley for some time to come.
McKinley wasn’t able to visit Norman for any games last season but said he will return to see OU this weekend.
“I talk to Coach Cooks and Coach Viney,” McKinley said. “I talk to them a lot actually. It’s just the way they do things and how they want to develop me as a player and as a person. They’re good people all the way around.”
OU is one of several major schools targeting McKinley, who could be the best cornerback in the state of Texas for the 2018 class. With that in mind, #SoonerSquad17 has been at it in a major way trying to recruit McKinley the last two weekends at the Opening regional and Rivals camps in the Dallas area.
When it came down to doing drills, McKinley was routinely paired up with one of OU’s commits and was seen talking with multiple OU commits on both weekends.
He remembers his OU trip from last summer, and the Sooners continue to do everything right this early in his recruitment.
“I’m just looking for a good family place,” McKinley said. “A place I can call home be proud to be called an alumnus. I’m looking for a place to grow as a man, not just with athletics.”
McKinley said he’s excited to return to Norman but don’t expect any major news just yet. He said he wants to visit Ohio State, Baylor, TCU and schools on the west coast before he does anything.
As for a decision, don’t hold your breath there, either. McKinley said he intends to wait, at least as of now. The earliest anything sort of choice would come is on his birthday, June 29.
McKinley has shown why in back-to-back weekends so many schools and recruiting analysts are so excited about what he brings to the table. This weekend will be another opportunity for OU to make sure its stays in that picture.
