Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger is going to have to do something he hasn’t done in a long time. He’s going to have to replace the bulk of his staff.
CBS Sports was the first to report assistant coach Lew Hill will be named the head coach at Texas Rio Grande Valley, while multiple sources have indicated assistant Steve Henson is set to become the head coach at UTSA.
Hill has been with Kruger since 2004 and coincidentally will be getting his first head coaching job at the exact same school as Kruger did. It was called Texas Pan-American back then.
Hill takes over for Dan Hipsher as Texas Rio Grande Valley was 8-22 this season.
As long as the relationship is with Kruger and Hill, it pales in comparison to that of Kruger and Henson. Henson has been with Kruger at Illinois, the Atlanta Hawks, UNLV and now in Norman but also played for Kruger at Kansas State.
Scout sources have said Henson has been in the driver’s seat for this position for the last couple of weeks ever since Brooks Thompson was fired after the season.
An announcement could come any day now as it pertains to Henson, while Hill will be formally introduced next week for his position.
