There were signs throughout the day with Oklahoma coaches Lincoln Riley and Cale Gundy sort of hinting at SoonerSquad17 adding another member.
This time it’s back to California as Santa Margarita (Calif.) High wide receiver/tight end Grant Calcaterra tweeted Thursday evening he’s the latest pledge for the Sooners.
Calcaterra made an unofficial visit two weeks ago to Norman that pretty much sealed the deal. Even before the visit, it felt like the Sooners were in the driver’s seat as the offer never felt like just another offer back in February.
Calcaterra, listed at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, is ranked No. 61 at wide receiver, and conventional wisdom says the Sooners will utilize him very much the same way they are using Mark Andrews right now.
Tight end in name, but more than capable of also being a quality wide receiver at OU.
Calcaterra went on a visit spree the last couple of weeks, starting at OU and going to places like Indiana, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, among other schools. As time went on, it felt more and more like the Sooners had done everything right, and it was just about when Calcaterra was ready to make that call.
The addition of Calcaterra gives the Sooners 12 commits for the second-ranked class by Scout for 2017. He is also the fourth wide receiver and third consecutive commitment to be a wide receiver.
Calcaterra joins Scout 300 members CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Reagor and Charleston Rambo in the fold. Reagor and Rambo committed on the same day Easter Sunday.
With OU’s spring game this weekend, you knew full well the Sooners would be looking to add to this impressive group. Getting Calcaterra is exactly the type of start necessary to get the momentum rolling once again.
