With spring evaluation coming around, you start to get a better feel of who are some of the most legitimate targets out there.
For Oklahoma, the process is a little bit different with the Sooners and SoonerSquad17 having 12 commitments, but still, there are names to watch.
The next three weeks Sooners Illustrated is going to look at one major target a day and where OU seems to stand at this point in time.
This is not based on who is the most realistic target but in alphabetical order.
La Grange (Texas) High ATH J.K. Dobbins (5-9, 199, No. 7 ATH, No. 77 Scout 300, committed to Ohio State)
(Editor’s note: Trey Sermon was originally slated in this spot. But he has committed to OU since this list was comprised so Dobbins is the next running back target).
Scout says: Perfect fit for the spread offense. He is a bit of a different breed from a speed and agility perspective. He's one of those guys who seems almost impossible to bring down as he ducks and dodges tackles and at times makes defenders look silly as they end up just grasping at nothing but air where Dobbins used to be standing. He is versatile in the fact that you can line him up in the backfield or split him out wide as a receiver. Dobbins has the speed to get to the edge on plays designed to get to the outside. He is also a dangerous threat as a return weapon. He did not catch many balls as a junior, but has shown in his career that he is a tremendous pass catcher and has that in his repertoire. – Greg Powers
The breakdown: Uh duh, Dobbins has been committed to Ohio State for nearly two full months now, but the Sooners haven’t thrown in the towel one bit. Dobbins was among the first trips for the OU coaches during the spring evaluation period. If there is a school that can make Dobbins re-think his pledge to the Buckeyes, it’s OU.
Why OU: The Sooners were admittedly his favorite school for a long time during this process. There’s a lot working in OU’s favor. The much closer distance to home. SoonerSquad17 going all-in with recruiting Dobbins but not doing it in a way to offend him. The coaches making a big impression once again during the spring evaluation trip. Everything is trending upward right now for OU with Dobbins.
Sooners chances: High. OU likes to hit home runs at running back, and the Sooners would do just that if OU can land Trey Sermon and J.K. Dobbins as the backs for this class. Two completely different style of runners with different body types, they would work with each other instead of against each other. OU is picking up that steam once again with Dobbins.
