After one year of not being counted on to carry the torch for the Big 12, Oklahoma was back in a familiar spot Thursday morning.
OU is ranked No. 3 in the preseason coaches poll and faces five ranked teams for the 2016 season, including two in the non-conference part of the schedule.
The Sooners kick off the season in 30 days going against Houston with the Cougars ranked No. 13 in Thursday’s poll and concluded the non-conference slate with a battle against fifth-ranked Ohio State.
Other Big 12 teams in the poll include TCU (No. 14), Oklahoma State (No. 19) and Baylor (No. 21). Alabama was No. 1, followed by Clemson, OU and Florida State.
The Sooners are coming off an 11-2 season, a Big 12 championship and becoming the first school from the conference to earn a berth in the four-team college football playoff. OU lost to Clemson in the Orange Bowl.
OU began practice Thursday morning with media day scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
