Rhett Bomar Diary: Back To School

Grand Prairie, Texas quarterback and Oklahoma commit Rhett Bomar talks about his summer in the first installment of his weekly diary on OUInsider.com

From Rhett Bomar's first football practice till signing day in February, OUInsider.com will feature exclusive weekly diary entries from the Grand Prairie, Texas quarterback himself.

The following is the first installment of the series:

I'm really excited about doing this journal for OUInsider.com It's a great idea, because it'll give everyone a chance to see what's going on in my life and during the football season. Hopefully, it'll be something that everyone enjoys.

Anyway, my recent trip to Norman on OU's media day was wild. My cousins, Ryan and Dustin McClure, came up with me, but we were really up there for the first day of practice, not media day. We got to Norman about 9 a.m., just in time for the fan festivities, but we didn't even go on the field then, because it was a little too hot, so we just stayed inside.

When it was time for practice, I walked out there with the coaches and was instantly surrounded by the media. I guess that was illegal, because the OU media relations guy came over and got them away from me, which was pretty funny.

Watching practice was cool, but before I went out there, I sat in on a two-hour quarterbacks meeting and got to learn some stuff on the offense from Coach Long. During practice, I got to meet most of the players and saw how they practiced. It was up-tempo and upbeat, which is how I like it.

It was good to see Joe Jon Finley again. We know each other from a photo shoot that we did last year for a football preview, because he's from Arlington High, which is about 15 minutes from my house. He's a cool guy and really nice.

After practice, we ate lunch with the players and then that night, my cousins and I just went and grabbed something to eat. We spent the night at the Sooner Hotel, because it was cheap.

On Thursday, I woke up at 7 a.m. and went to some more meetings. After that, I went to practice again and then ate lunch with Coach Long, Coach Venables and the team. While I was there, Chris Patterson showed up and I hung out with him for a little bit, then we went home. Overall, my visit was impressive. It was a good time.

Lately, people have been spreading rumors that I'm still talking to Texas and might visit there. That's news to me, because it's not true. I'd say 80 percent of the stuff you read on Internet message boards isn't true, but I guess people have a right to their opinion. You've just got to be careful what you believe and not believe. I really don't look at much on the Internet, except for ESPN.com and a couple of Oklahoma sites sometimes, but for the most part, I just look at ESPN.

As for Texas, when I picked OU, I called Coach Brown and left a message on his phone about my decision. They were kind of upset, but they're going to tell you good luck and stuff like that. They really didn't say much. It wasn't a long conversation. Anytime you do something like that, you feel bad, but that's just part of it I guess. We haven't talked since then and they haven't sent me anything either.

Last Wednesday, I started school and had my first practice last Monday. I've got a scrimmage this Saturday at Rockwall, another scrimmage the next weekend and then our first game after that. I'm doing well in practice and it was a good first week. I think our team did a good job getting back into it. I think we'll have a pretty good team this year. My preseason goal is to make the playoffs.

When I'm not practicing, I've been hanging out with friends and my girlfriend, Christy, who's leaving next Saturday for college at OU. It'll be tough seeing her go, because we hang out all the time. We plan to stay together and see how that goes, so it'll be all right. I might just have something planned for her, but we'll have to see.

I haven't seen any movies recently, but I have been playing NCAA Football 2004 on my PlayStation2. Right now, I'm in the middle of a dynasty with OU and I've already recruited myself like four times. I've won five straight national championships and won the Heisman a couple of times.

Going back to school's been cool, because I'm a senior now, so it's different, because everyone's gone. Being the oldest is definitely different, but fun. My classes are pretty easy, because I don't have any math this year.

Other then that, not much is going on except for the start of football season. I'm thinking about coming up to the North Texas game with a couple of my friends, but I'm not sure right now. I'll let you know next week.

Got a question for Rhett? If so, e-mail it with your name and city to OUInsiderDiary@hotmail.com and he might just answer your question in one of his future diary entries.
