Addison Gumbs commits to OU

OU gets back on the board in California and in the Scout 300 with outside linebacker Addison Gumbs.

Back to linebacker. Back to California. Back to the Scout 300 for Oklahoma when it comes to its 2017 class known as SoonerSquad17.

Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep outside linebacker Addison Gumbs is the latest to announce his commitment to the Sooners, making it official on Twitter on Wednesday and confirming to

Gumbs, ranked No. 7 outside linebacker and No. 120 overall in the Scout 300, has been a major OU target at outside linebacker for several months.

In the spring, all signs started to point toward Gumbs perhaps looking like he would indeed be headed to Norman with OU.

But as spring turned to summer, the feeling started to become Gumbs would look elsewhere and find another home at a school like Texas A&M or UCLA.

Gumbs ended all the speculation with his announcement, giving OU its third linebacker for the class and its second in a row.

The Sooners have changed their mindset from a patient approach to a reserve your spot mentality, and that’s what is going on right now at outside linebacker.

Entering last week, OU had zero commits at outside linebacker. Now? The Sooners have two with Gumbs and Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Elkins linebacker Kenneth Murray.

Gumbs in OU’s 14th commitment in the Scout 300. Fourteen out of 19 current pledges, 74 percent in the Scout 300 when the Sooners only had six for the entire 2016 class.

With Gumbs in the fold, OU remains a solid No. 3 in Scout’s rankings.
