NORMAN – Oklahoma Sooners free safety Ahmad Thomas walked into the OU team meeting room to speak with the media, and there was a big smile that didn’t leave his face – even after random questions about Mike Stoops coaching in the press box, what practice has looked like and the key to victory against Houston in the season opener.
Now, it’s not out of character for Thomas to smile. He’s usually a very happy person.
This day was a bit more exciting for Thomas, at least as of 10:24 a.m.
That was when Thomas became a father.
“Man, it was amazing,” Thomas said. “It’s a different feeling. It was so emotional. I can’t even explain it.”
Thomas slept on a pullout mattress at the hospital last night before his daughter, Skylynn, was born this morning. He was back at practice this afternoon with a medical bracelet still on his right wrist and his daughter’s name printed on solid black letters.
Thomas, who had to miss just one practice because of the birth, stayed updated on the delivery through a teammate, who was responsible for his phone and any incoming calls from Thomas’ girlfriend of four years.
Having a daughter has changed Thomas already.
It has made him more focused because of his impending responsibilities. He knows things have to change within himself.
Thomas once played for himself and his teammates. Now, he’s playing for something a little bit smaller in size.
“I’m gonna dedicate every game to her,” Thomas said.
