RECRUITING: OU still leads for Florida LB

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. linebacker Vernson Smith says OU's tradition and coaches seperate them from the pack.

VERNON SMITH, LB, 6-1, 222, 4.6, NORTH LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA (NORTH LAUDERDALE ACADEMY):

JH: When do you play your first game?

VS: "We start our season tomorrow with Miami Northwestern. We are at home tomorrow and we should be able to win the game."

JH: Are you ready for the season?

VS: "I felt I had a great summer. I gained a little weight (222) and I feel I got a little quicker."

JH: Will you play outside or inside linebacker?

VS: "I am going to play outside linebacker and I will play both on the weakside and the strongside."

JH: Are you looking forward to the coaches calling again?

VS: "I am really looking forward to when the coaches can start calling again. I haven't heard from them in a while and I need to make contact with them again."

JH: Do you have a top five right now?

VS: "Oklahoma, Miami, Ohio State, Florida and Pittsburgh. My favorite is still Oklahoma."

JH: You have always listed Oklahoma at the top of your list, so what is it about the Sooners that you like so much?

VS: "I just see so many good things about Oklahoma. They have a great program and they have great linebackers and a great linebacker tradition."

JH: What coaches are you dealing with from Oklahoma?

VS: "I have enjoyed talking to Coach (Darrell Wyatt) and Coach (Brent) Venables. They are pretty good coaches and do a good job of selling their school. Coach Venables is a great linebacker coach and would be a great coach to play for."

JH: When do you think you will take your visits?

VS: "I think I am going to take them after the season. I haven't set any visits yet and I haven't even talked to any school about them."
