We’ve reached Wednesdays in January, which means it’s time for one thing with the Oklahoma Target 10. The Target 10 is different from the Wish List because where the list examines each position, the Target 10 looks at the overall scope of things.
OU enters late-January with 25 commitments. And though it’s called the Target 10, think we all know OU won’t have 10 more commitments with SoonerSquad17. “Reserve your spot.”
Each Wednesday this list will be released and surely will go through massive changes as visits occur, commitments happen and recruits’ feelings change.
Without further ado, the third edition of the OU Target 10.
Ardmore (Okla.) High DL Tyreece Lott
Last week: No. 10
OU simply had to get Lott on campus. Following an outstanding visit to Norman last weekend, the Sooners are in the driver’s seat for Lott to officially decommit from TCU and sign with SoonerSquad17 when it’s all said and done. As of now, Lott has Friday marked as his decision day. Give a lot of credit to Calvin Thibodeaux, who kept coming despite Lott’s TCU pledge in December. OU moving to a four-man front also seems to be swaying Lott to Norman instead of Fort Worth.
Charlotte Mallard Creek WR Ryan Jones
Last week: No. 9
OU made this offer way back when in July 2015. He was committed to North Carolina. He was kicked off his high school team. He decommitted from UNC. He was allowed back in the good graces of his team. His attitude, according to his coach, has changed dramatically. And he’s still lingering out there as a four-star uncommitted athlete. Huh? Penciled in an OU visit for next weekend so we’ll see how things go between Jones and James Robinson… OK, that’s what we said last week. Nothing has changed as Jones is set to still visit Norman this weekend, solidified by visit from Kerry Cooks on Tuesday evening.
Katy (Texas) High DL Corey Bethley
Last week: NR
Welcome back to the countdown, Bethley. OU and Texas A&M seem to be getting either Bethley or Josh Rogers. Following Rogers’ visit to College Station last weekend, think you can pencil in Rogers to the Aggies. That should open the door for Bethley to be a Sooner. He’s someone Thibodeaux has been talking to for a long time. When OU made the final three earlier this month, it was a bit of a shock. Now? Hmm, starting to see the pieces come together at exactly the right time, especially a move to a four-man front.
Houston Bellaire Episcopal DT Marvin Wilson
Last week: No. 6
The Sooners brought the house in their final effort with Wilson. Six coaches visited Wilson in Houston on Monday evening, four them wearing an OU No. 99 jersey, the number he’d wear in Norman. Bob Stoops, Mike Stoops, Calvin Thibodeaux, Tim Kish, Lincoln Riley and Dennis Simmons. Dang. OU going to a four-man front definitely helps the Sooners in this chase, but it’s still not a slam dunk. Not for OU, not for anybody. OU, LSU, Ohio State, Florida State. Take your pick. The Sooners have made all the right moves so they can rest easy knowing that.
Temple (Texas) High DE Taquon Graham
Last week: No. 3
A tricky one to decipher. Graham has been solid with Texas for four months, including a trip to Austin earlier this month. But the OU visit lingers. His relationship with Calvin Thibodeaux is the No. 1 reason why the Sooners are even in this hunt at the moment. The curious part is Texas sources feel good about Graham but also realize the genuine threat that is coming from a visit like this. OU loves to close strong on the final weekend. Graham would be the definition of that.
Lakeland (Fla.) High WR James Robinson
Last week: 7
Robinson is done with visits. He’s down to OU, Ohio State or Florida. The smart money still says the Gators, though, and that’s why the Sooners are trying so hard with Ryan Jones here down the stretch even if it’s still not quite clear what Jones’ role could be. OU did well with Robinson on his official visit for Bedlam and did well with the in-home visits throughout the last month. Florida seems likely. If it is OU, then would make one heck of a quartet. Pretty nice situation for the Sooners to be in no matter how you slice it.
Cannot realistically think of 10 targets at this point. Maybe Tyler Taylor if things with Jacob Phillips go south, but other than that, OU has been able to zero in with its guys that it’s not grasping at straws this late in the game. And if there’s a surprise, there’s a reason they call it a surprise.
Removed from list: Tre Norwood (committed to OU); Austin Faoliu; Josh Rogers; Tyler Taylor; Samuel Barnes.
