Third time is the charm, at least Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep defensive lineman Troy James sure is hoping the third one is correct.
James, a three-star prospect, announced he has committed to Oklahoma on Saturday, fresh off decommitting from Arkansas.
Locked with his Arkansas commitment since November, the Sooners and defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux never went away. The persistence and steady recruitment of James paid off resulting in a mid-week visit to Norman in the last few days.
James returned home Thursday evening and announced Friday afternoon he was decommitting from the Razorbacks and waited a day to make the OU pledge official.
James began this cycle a two-star committed to Kansas. Arkansas entered the picture as did the Sooners back in the fall. The problem was James was never able to make it to Norman for a visit.
He had already set up his own personal deadline for when he was going to announce. Without seeing Norman, everybody knew Fayetteville would be the spot.
James played his way into his three-star ranking and is OU’s third defensive linemen commit in just over a month. It was panic time for some OU fans with Thibodeaux this time two months ago, but Thibodeaux’s determination has won out.
It started last month with the pledge of Weatherford (Texas) High defensive tackle Zack McKinney. It continued Friday morning when Ardmore (Okla.) High defensive tackle Tyreece Lott flipped from TCU to OU. And now James.
The Sooners are at 26 commits for the highly touted 2017 class. And SoonerSquad17 is not done yet as OU looks for a strong close to this cycle.
