It’s national signing day and Oklahoma put in the work to make its SoonerSquad17 one of the best in Norman in some time.
Sooners Illustrated is here to give a position-by-position overview of the newest recruits headed to Norman.
Scranton (Pa.) Lackawanna CC ATH Marcelias Sutton
The story: Not much to this one, really. Committed to North Carolina State out of high school, things just sort of drifted apart with the Wolfpack, and Sutton became OU’s gain in early March. The real drama, if there was any, was whether or not Sutton would remain a part of the class. He has been such a quiet recruit, almost a forgotten recruit in a lot of circles, that you wondered. There were never hints of him leaving, but silence isn’t always the best thing. But never a doubt in the end.
Marietta (Ga.) Sprayberry RB Trey Sermon
The story: You knew OU had to hit a home run at running back for the 2017 class, and Sermon was the first major piece to that puzzle. Following a spring visit, the Sooners took the clear lead before Sermon committed a few weeks later. Sermon flirted early in the regular season with other schools but never had anybody concerned. Multiple unofficial visits combined with a great official visit sealed the deal for Sermon sticking with the Sooners.
Mansfield (Texas) High RB Kennedy Brooks
The story: A spring visit to OU seemed to put the Sooners in the driver’s seat but as days turned into weeks turned into months, there was some worrying. Brooks picked OU in early October and never looked back. Combine that with his sensational senior season, and you see why this seems to be a perfect match for all parties involved. One official visit to Norman and among the most drama-free recruitments you’ll find.
Charlotte Vance TE/H-Back Jeremiah Hall
The story: Hall was an interesting one being one of those kids who committed to OU without having seen the campus first. His initial taste of OU came during the ChampUBBQ in July so really you couldn’t have asked for a better impression. Once it became obvious OU wanted the next Dimitri Flowers, all signs pointed toward Hall becoming that guy. And once he committed, there was no doubt he was sticking with OU. Had a tremendous senior season at Vance.
