Meet SoonerSquad17: Defensive line

It's signing day. Meet the newest Sooners, position-by-position.

It’s national signing day and Oklahoma put in the work to make its SoonerSquad17 one of the best in Norman in some time.

Sooners Illustrated is here to give a position-by-position overview of the newest recruits headed to Norman.

Defensive line

Tulsa (Okla.) Memorial DE Isaiah Thomas

The story: Thomas became a name to know right after signing day last year. Offer after offer, and it wasn’t long before OU became the school to watch. Add in the hiring of Calvin Thibodeaux as defensive line coach, and Thibodeaux went to work to land Thomas. That eventually occurred in late May and Thomas continued to progress throughout his senior season to earn Scout 300 honors and stay there for the final rankings.

Weatherford (Texas) High DT Zack McKinney

The story: A fun one for OU fans. It was a pure OU-Texas battle with McKinney giving detailed reasons as to why OU was the easy answer. He didn’t mince his words and became a quick favorite among OU fans. McKinney is someone who really emerged during his senior season and committed in mid-December. He took his official visit the final weekend before signing day, and it’s pretty clear he feels he has made the right choice.

Ardmore (Okla.) High DT Tyreece Lott

The story: Thibodeaux had been eyeing Lott for a while but didn’t make the offer until December. Initially, it was too late with the work TCU had put in as Lott committed to the Frogs. But Thibodeaux never threw in the towel and that persistence paid off in a major way in January. A great official visit was combined with Lott flipping his commitment to OU and becoming the sixth in-state prospect to be with SoonerSquad17.

Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep DT Troy James

The story: Once upon a time, James was a two-star recruit committed to Kansas. OU offered in early November but didn’t have enough time to make a dent with James when he switched his pledge to Arkansas. Thibodeaux, though, kept trying to persuade James to see the campus and that finally occurred last week. James knew before he even left Norman that he wanted to be a Sooner and made it official Saturday morning.
