Meet SoonerSquad17: Defensive back

It's signing day. Meet the newest Sooners, position-by-position.

It’s national signing day and Oklahoma put in the work to make its SoonerSquad17 one of the best in Norman in some time.

Sooners Illustrated is here to give a position-by-position overview of the newest recruits headed to Norman.

Defensive back

Southlake (Texas) Carroll S Robert Barnes

The story: What more could you ask for from Barnes, an OU legacy? He was the second commit way back when in September 2015 and never once gave anybody a reason to pause. Not only was he a vocal leader off the field and on social media, his play on the field gave OU fans even more reason to smile. When it’s all said and done, Barnes is the highest-ranked signee for OU, which is saying something for a class with 19 four-star prospects.

OKC John Marshall DB Justin Broiles

The story: Again, this one felt like out of left field. Broiles never seemed like a huge OU fan. But once the offer and commitment happened, whew, you couldn’t stop Broiles from talking about the Sooners and recruiting for OU’s class. Broiles had a tremendous senior season on both sides of the ball and his physicality really showed at the Under Armour All-America Game. A vocal leader on social media for SoonerSquad17, he shouldn’t slow down now that he’s in Norman.

Tulsa (Okla.) Union CB Tre Brown

The story: Brown felt destined to be a Sooner since 2014 when he arrived on the scene as a sophomore. It was just about the right time to strike for defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks. Once he did, the countdown was on for Brown. He committed in early March. Though not overly enthusiastic on social media, there really was never any doubt about Brown heading into the season. A late trip to Florida scared some, but again, he was locked in with SoonerSquad17.

Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside CB Tre Norwood

The story: You know what Cooks likes in his cornerbacks. A little bit smaller and a lot faster than what OU has had before. Norwood is that guy, 100 percent. Once committed to Louisville, January saw a barrage of offers for Norwood from the likes of Notre Dame and Tennessee. Norwood committed to Cooks during an in-home visit and then made his first trip to Norman over the weekend to solidify his standing at OU.

Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek ATH Ryan Jones

The story: The offer was made July 2015, showing again that you never know in recruiting when things are going to perk up. Jones had some off the field issues in terms of being a teammate and was also committed to North Carolina for a long time. Those two things made him almost slip through the cracks until OU came back into play. And boy did the Sooners ever. Cooks nailed the in-home, Jones visited last weekend and committed before heading back to Carolina. A pure steal for OU.
