About Alabama
The Crimson Tide opened the 2003 season with a 40-17 win over South Florida in Birmingham. The Tide trailed USF 17-7 with 1:32 to go in the first half before scoring 33 unanswered points the rest of the way. Sophomore quarterback Brodie Croyle completed 14 of 27 passes for 203 yards and one touchdown pass. Senior running back and former Texas Tech transfer Shaud Williams scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one punt return) and finished with 98 yards on 28 carries. Alabama held the Bulls running game to 51 yards on 22 carries and 256 yards overall. The Tide returns 11 starters (five on offense, six on defense) from last years 10-3 team that would have qualified for the SEC title game had they been eligible.

The Series
The series is tied at 1-1-1. Oklahoma won the last meeting a year ago in Norman 37-27. The Sooners jumped out to a 23-3 lead but the Tide rolled back in the second half to take a 27-23 lead in the fourth quarter. OU bounced back on the next drive as Renaldo Works ran a combined 62 yards on a pair of shovel passes to set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Kejuan Jones with 2:11 to go. The Sooners extended the lead to 37-27 on Bama's next drive when Eric Bassey picked up a Tyler Watts fumble and returned it 45-yards to seal the win.

The Rankings
Oklahoma is No. 1 in both the ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press polls. Alabama is unranked in both polls, but received 77 votes in the AP Poll which would put them at No. 27 if the poll was carried out past 25. Alabama is ineligible to receive votes in the ESPN/USA Today Poll because of probation. Oklahoma is the first-ever top ranked opponent to visit Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

The Coaches
Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops is 44-9 overall and 1-0 against against Alabama. Alabama Head Coach Mike Shula is 1-0 in his first season.
