Sooner Intel: OU offers week in review

Intel returns examining the key offers made by OU this week.

We’re still more than 10 months away from signing day for the 2018 class, but this is the harsh reality right now. If you make an offer to a highly touted 2018 prospect at this juncture, then you’re probably wasting your time.

There’s always going to be room for those recruits who improve as seniors and earn some more looks they didn’t get back in the spring. But for the most part, what programs are focusing on during the spring and summer are the younger kids.

Oklahoma did just that with a trio of major 2019/2020 offers as the Sooners continue to adapt to today’s recruiting landscape.

2020 Aledo (Texas) High RB Jase McClellan

Start with last weekend’s offer to McClellan, who made an unofficial trip to Norman last Saturday. OU and Aledo has never seemed to work out with Ryan Newsome and Chuck Filiaga the latest examples of that. Aledo was also the home of star running back Johnathan Gray, and McClellan seems to be the next big one at the school. SMU and TCU have already offered the 2020 prospect, and he became OU’s first running back offer for the class.

2019 Wichita (Kan.) Northwest DE Marcus Hicks

There’s just something about an OU offer in the state of Kansas that makes you realize it’s worth tracking from that point on. Whether it’s Blake Bell in the past or the most recent one of Amani Bledsoe, the Sooners fare well. So now comes Hicks as OU is one of the initial offers for this defensive end who seems to be ideal for a 4-3 defensive front. Hicks is hopeful to make a trip to Norman this weekend to get a feel of everything with the Sooners.

2019 Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian TE Austin Stogner

Stogner has torn it up in camp settings throughout this month, but it wasn’t until a trip to Norman on Wednesday that the offer was extended. Stogner said he has developed a nice early relationship with tight ends coach Cale Gundy and said he will indeed return to Norman sometime in the future. Stogner’s offer sheet is littered with Big 12 rivals but also has a big non-regional one in Florida State. No idea if OU will get Stogner at this point, but it was certainly smart to already get into the mix this early.
