Sooners take spotlight at NFL Draft

OU is ready to hear its name called multiple times this weekend with the NFL Draft.

It’s time for the NFL Draft and that’s usually a pretty good weekend to be an Oklahoma fan. And OU fans can use some good news right about now after recent downturns on the recruiting trail.

This year seems pretty clear-cut about who is going to be drafted. Unless something changes late into the weekend, expect five former OU players to be drafted in running backs Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine, wide receiver Dede Westbrook, defensive lineman Charles Walker and linebacker Jordan Evans.

The Sooners have fared extremely well in the draft during Bob Stoops’ tenure, and it is something the staff is taking pride in.

“It’s very important to us,” offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley said. “They’re not always right, in my opinion. I’m sure they say the same thing about us. But it’s important to us that our guys that have good enough talent, that we develop them here so that they’re able to go use it.

“You’ve seen—we’ve been proud of some of the guys that have developed not just within this system, but this program, and the way they’ve been able to kind of position themselves right now for the draft.

“Is it the most important thing at the end of the day to us? Probably not. But is it up there? Yeah, because it’s these guys’ futures, and it shows how well you’ve prepared ‘em. So yeah, we want nothing more than to see these guys do well.”
