It’s May and that means a quite a few things in recruiting and also means the return of the ‘Wish List’ for Oklahoma’s class.
This time around, it’s #SavageTeam2K18 that has already featured some major ups and downs with nine months to go until signing day.
Like to pick May as the month because it means we’re one-fourth of the way through with the recruiting cycle and you start to get a better feel of things.
You have the firm (early) foundation for your class. Any class worth its salt has some major members included by this point as the staff has made sure to identify some key components. OU has certainly done that on both sides of the ball.
Spring football is done. That means you had as many top targets as humanly possible on campus for spring practice, and of course, for the spring game so you have a much better feel of who’s legit and who you might be moving on from. OU certainly did that in the last month.
The spring evaluation period is in full force. We’re entering Week 3 of the spring evaluation period but really Week 2 for OU since the Sooners were still practicing during the initial week. It’s a chance to make some offers and see if you can strike gold quick.
When looking at the Sooners class, all signs are going to point toward quarterback. It’s just not like OU to not have it quarterback at this stage in the game.
Following the flipped commitment of Newbury Park (Calif.) High’s Cameron Rising from OU to Texas, offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is back to the grind.
Not ideal by any means, but a good motto has been “In Riley We Trust,” and this is a huge chance for Riley to prove once again why he has earned that reputation.
Really, though, when you look at OU’s depth chart and the 2018 class, the No. 1 thing people should be pointing toward is the defensive line.
The stability is finally there with Calvin Thibodeaux onboard for his second year. After going through Jerry Montgomery and Diron Reynolds and Thibodeaux the last three years, there is no starting over again this time around.
Thibodeaux has some major targets to view and a lot of them from the Midlands region, which you feel should benefit the Sooners in a big-time way.
So spring practice is done. Camp isn’t for another three months so for those who don’t follow recruiting on a day-to-day basis, get acquainted with OU’s #ST2K18 class and targets.
Every day this week Sooners Illustrated is going to dissect where OU stands at offensive positions before unveiling the complete offensive “Wish List.”
The same will be said for next week, detailing all the defensive numbers before compiling them into one selection. A look at each position and how many OU needs at the spot and who the top targets are as of May.
OU’s #SoonerSquad17 set the bar at 27 signees and ranked No. 6. Come along for the ride as we try to determine where #ST2K18 fits into things nine months away from signing day.
