Before spring practice started, Sooners Illustrated asked the 17 questions for Oklahoma for 2017 spring football.
With spring ball officially in the books, it’s time to look back and see what was answered positive or negative and what still remains to be seen.
This three-day series will focus on offense, defense and then in generality.
Day three? Some in general questions.
Which redshirt freshman takes spotlight?
This is an easy one. Linebacker Jon-Michael Terry made the jump from redshirt to starting inside linebacker. Not too shabby. Terry is a natural inside linebacker, which will be a welcome sight at OU. He’s not the vocal guy right now, but he’s doing everything right to end up being incredibly successful for the Sooners.
Which mid-year enrollee(s) is ahead of the curve?
A few, for sure. You start with center Creed Humphrey and linebacker Kenneth Murray. Both were the talk of spring in terms of the new guys, but they’re not alone. Both juco players in Marcelias Sutton and Marquise Brown fared well. Defensive end/linebacker Addison Gumbs was another name mentioned quite a bit as was tight end Grant Calcaterra. Was a nice spring for the mid-year group.
Who will be returning kicks/punts?
You never fully know until the full team arrives in summer and Jay Boulware starts piecing things together. It does look like running back Rodney Anderson will be used in the kickoff return game as well as Mykel Jones. Then you could have Sutton or Brown back there for punt return. OU tends to go running back at KR and receiver at PR and that’s how it’s shaping up as of now.
