Przybylo: Sizing up the 2018 QB search

Trying to decipher what's going on with OU and its quest for a 2018 quarterback.

Have had a lot of people DM me on Twitter and send private messages on the premium board so let’s just go ahead and do it all at once.

Thoughts on Oklahoma’s 2018 quarterback search.

There are two legitimate players right now in Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West’s Adrian Martinez and Waco (Texas) Midway’s Tanner Mordecai.

Martinez, a four-star prospect, was offered last week. Mordecai, a high three-star prospect, was offered last night.

Then you have guys on the peripheral that won’t come into play unless something goes down with Martinez and Mordecai.

Adrian Martinez

After being committed to Cal for months, he backed off a few weeks ago with just about everybody assuming he was going to flip to Tennessee.

This was all just timing. Because if OU wasn’t in the picture right now, it does feel like Martinez would already be a Vol. Heck, he still might anyway, but things had to slow down first.

Martinez has made the trip to Knoxville and that is the major difference here. Texted with Martinez on Tuesday evening, and he said he still doesn’t have any plans to visit Norman.

Now, sure, there are tons of cases where recruits commit to schools without having seen the campus. The one spot you usually just don’t see that happening is at quarterback.

Despite what is obviously a great bond between Martinez and OU sophomore linebacker Caleb Kelly, also from Clovis West, Martinez needs to see the campus.

So now you’ve got Martinez not seeing Norman. And now you’ve got the Vols pushing hard this week for some sort of answer from Martinez because they want to know or they’re moving on.

Would imagine OU offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley caught wind of this and decided he needed to make a move as well.

Couldn’t wait forever with Martinez so Riley’s next play was Tuesday.

Tanner Mordecai

Early last week Mordecai was followed by Riley on Twitter and Mordecai reciprocated that gesture. Although Martinez felt like the No. 1 option, Riley was hard at work at finding a local name worth pursuing.

That name is Mordecai, who is from the same high school as junior safety Kahlil Haughton.

Mordecai, for months, has felt like Baylor’s guy. But the longer he goes without committing, the more you wonder.

Texas Tech has Mordecai as a huge priority. South Carolina and Georgia have entered the mix here in the last couple of weeks.

And then Riley came calling Tuesday. Evaluating Mordecai in person and then making the offer and Mordecai going public in the evening.

So now we wait. Wait for either Mordecai or Martinez to make the trip to Norman. Wait for Martinez to give an answer to Tennessee. Because if it is indeed the Vols, Riley couldn’t be caught putting all eggs in the one basket.

Also, it shows OU won't wait around forever for Martinez, either, just like Tennessee. Riley will continue putting in the work if Martinez isn't going to give a clear idea of where he stands. First come, first serve might be going too far, but it's definitely trying to make sure OU isn't wishing and waiting.

There’s a chance Martinez could pick OU at week’s end, but again, it’s just so unlikely that a quarterback commits before seeing the campus.

Martinez might be the bigger splash, Mordecai would be a great bump in the whole regional proximity thing because he could make the trip from Waco to Norman quite a few times whenever OU needed his presence in recruiting.

There’s a lot to like with each guy, and it’s clear Riley is doing his homework. Quarterback recruiting is so intriguing, and unfortunately for OU, the Sooners have a lot of intrigue right now.
