Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley has found his quarterback for the 2018 class in a rival’s backyard.
Waco (Texas) Midway quarterback Tanner Mordecai confirmed his commitment to the Sooners on Thursday afternoon via message to Sooners Illustrated. It was first reported by David Smoak.
Mordecai, a high three-star prospect, was offered by OU last month but never gave away anything regarding his recruitment in recent weeks.
After looking like a lock to attend Baylor, Mordecai was bombarded with one big offer after another in the month of May, which included the one from the Sooners.
Mordecai is OU’s eighth commitment for the 2018 class and now gives OU that oh-so-necessary quarterback face in terms of recruiting the rest of the class.
OU did have the commitment of Newbury Park (Calif.) High quarterback Cameron Rising for more than eight months before he flipped his decision to Texas on April 22.
Riley, who had no reason to seek out 2018 quarterbacks for nearly a whole calendar year, went back to work and Mordecai was easily among the first targets Riley went after. Riley, once again, got his man.
Mordecai does have an OU tie as safety Kahlil Haughton also attended Waco Midway.
