Saturday's matchup marks the 98th meeting between the Sooners and Longhorns. The series, which began in 1900, has been played in Dallas since 1912 and in the Cotton Bowl since 1929. Texas leads the all-time series 55-37-5, but the Sooners have won each of the last three meetings by double digits and by an average of 23 points per game. Texas holds a 43-33-4 edge in Dallas. The last time Oklahoma won four straight against the Longhorns was 1985-88.
Oklahoma is No. 1 in both the ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press polls while Texas is No. 11 in both polls. Saturday's meeting will match the 11th time in the series history that either Texas or Oklahoma has come into the game ranked No. 1. The top-ranked team is 8-1-1 in the series. OU is 5-1 when ranked No. 1 against Texas. This season also marks the 21st time that both teams have met while ranked in the top 15.
Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops is 48-9 overall in his fifth season at OU. Texas Head Coach Mack Brown is 53-16 in his sixth season in Austin. Stoops is 3-1 against Brown and Longhorns. Brown is 2-3 against the Sooners.
Texas has faced the nation's No. 1-ranked team 11 times and are 3-8 when facing top-ranked opponents ... UT head coach Mack Brown is one of the few head coaches who has seen the Oklahoma/Texas rivalry from both sides. Brown was OU's offensive coordinator in 1984 when No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Oklahoma played to a 15-15 tie. ... The Texas defense has forced 16 turnovers this season and have generated a total of 79 points off of turnovers ... The Horns lead the nation in pass defense (110.0 yards per game). Through five games, the Horns have only given up 37 completions and have allowed only two touchdown passes ... Linebacker Derrick Johnson has forced five of the 16 turnovers (three interceptions, two forced fumbles) ... UT's senior receiving trio of Roy Williams, B.J. Johnson and Sloan Thomas are statistically the most successful threesome in Longhorns' history, and have combined to catch 41 passes for 736 yards and eight touchdowns in five games this season ... Williams has also caught a pass in 39 straight games ... Junior running back Cedric Benson moved from eighth to sixth on the Texas all-time career rushing list with his 54-yard performance last week against Kansas State ...UT quarterback Chance Mock has now thrown 104 consecutive passes with out an interception ... Mock has also completed 53 of his 95 pass attempts for 812 yards and has thrown a TD pass in five straight games ... QB Vince Young set career-highs against Kansas state with 80 rushing yards and 69 passing yards ... The Longhorns rank second nationally in scoring offense (45.8) but are 40th in total offense (406.0) ... Defensively, Texas ranks 30th in scoring defense (18.0) and 18th in total defense (299.0).
OU is off to a 5-0 start for the fourth year in a row and the 22nd time in school history ... The Sooners have won eight of their last 10 games in the State of Texas and are 14-1 against teams from the Lone Star State in their last 15 games ... OU is ranked No. 1 in the polls for yet another week and will take a 63-6 record when No. 1 into the Cotton Bowl ... The Oklahoma offense is clicking on cylinders having scored over 50 points for the third straight game last week against Iowa State. That feat hasn't been accomplished by a Sooner team since the 1956 season. No Sooner team has accomplished the feat four straight games ... OU's worst passing day of the season (243 yards against UCLA) was only bested four times by last year's aerial attack ... The Sooners' current pass completion rate of .681 is well over pace of beating out the current all-time mark of .642 set in 2000 ... And the running game hasn't been too shabby either. The Sooners have rushed for over 100 yards in four of their five games this season and have averaged 174 yards per game and 4.2 yards per carry over their last three contests ... OU QB Jason White, who has just played in 16 games during his career, is currently 10th on the all-time career passing list at OU with 2,234 yards ... White is No. 3 nationally in passing efficiency, No. 15 in total offense, No. 15 in total offense and No. 3 in points responsible for ... Oklahoma's offense ranks fourth nationally in scoring offense (44.2) and are 16th in total offense (453.80) ... On defense, the Sooners rank 14th nationally in scoring defense (15.0) and are 2nd in total defense (245.4)
