Recruiting: Arlington DT committed, but looking

Arlington (Bowie) DT Darrian Billups talks about his OU-Texas experience

JH: Did you go to the OU/Texas game?

DB: My head coach is an alumnus of Texas and he said he wanted me to experience being at a rivalry game. He wanted me to see how the players, coaches and fans take the game. I actually got a chance to see how crazy it was as fans actually were fighting over which school they wanted to be better. I actually thought it was pretty fun and laughed about how crazy and tight the people were. I really enjoyed myself as I got a chance to walk the field to see up close the players from Texas and OU, and see how I measure up. It is easy to see how people enjoy themselves at both schools."

JH: Did you watch the game as a fan, or were you trying to learn about your position?

DB: I was watching the defensive tackles quit a bit. I am a huge fan of Tommie Harris. I heard a lot about him his junior year. The fact that he has the instincts to come and start as a true freshman is amazing and he dominated the whole game. Tubbs anchored the middle for Texas and did a great job as OU couldn't run the ball up the middle all day. Corey Redding also was strong outside. However, I was really impressed with Tommie Harris and I never took my eyes off of him.

JH: After watching the game do you see yourself playing for either team?

DB: I actually could see myself playing defense for either team. OU plays stifling defense and their front-seven is awesome. Then their secondary was great, especially Roy Williams and all the big plays he made. Texas can really run to the ball and their front people are some of the fastest players on the team, especially considering how big they are.

JH: Did the game change your impression of either team?

DB: I really haven't been involved with Texas until lately. They look like a team with a lot of promise for the future. OU has been recruiting me since this summer and they look like they could win the national title again. Both teams could still be a possibility."

JH: Are you going to visit either team soon?

DB: My coach and I are going down to Austin to watch Texas play Colorado. We are going to walk the campus and hopefully talk to some players. I know a lot about B. J. Johnson and my coach knows him a great deal. I went to the OU camp this past summer. I liked the campus setting and everything about it. I liked the coaching staff, but I didn't get to meet any players. The coaching staff was very nice and OU has everything that you might expect from a national championship team.

JH: Are you still committed to SMU?

DB: I am still committed to SMU at this point, however I am still going to look around and I really could sign anywhere. I am going to take my visits to see what else is available for me. I am also talking to New Mexico, USC, Texas, Vanderbilt and Georgia."
