ZACH MILLER, TE, 6'5, 245, 4.67, PHOENIX DESERT HIGH, ARIZONA:
There may not be a better tight end prospect in the country, and when a guy of Miller's ability is on the market he draws attention from coast-to-coast. Miller has already been offered by 25 different schools and at this point he has narrowed that decision down to five.
"I am visiting Tennessee (11-21), Arizona State (12-5), Miami (12-12), OU (12-19) and UCLA (1-10)," said Miller. "I really don't have a favorite right now, and I think I will take my visits and see who emerges after that. Right now I am extremely open."
Miller is a four-year starter at tight end and he went both ways last year at defensive end and this year at linebacker. However, everybody loves Miller as a tight end where he caught 46 passes for 780 yards and seven touchdowns through 11 games. Those stats were better than a year ago when Miller caught 27 catches for 520 yards and six touchdowns. Miller is very good on defense as well finishing the year with 134 total tackles and 11 sacks.
"I like defense, but I want to play tight end," said Miller. "Notre Dame recruited me for a while at defensive end, but everybody else is recruiting me to play tight end. I like to get the ball in my hands and scoring touchdowns is the best thing about football I my opinion. I just think offense is more fun."
Miller can bench 325 pounds, squats 560 and his vertical is 31-inches. Miller camped at the USC Nike camp and he went to the Arizona State one-day camp as well. Miller throws the discus (4th in state with a throw of 160'8 ) and shot (49.0).
Miller also has a solid interest in OU.
"I really like OU and I enjoy talking to Coach (Bob) Stoops and Coach (Chuck) Long, who are great coaches," said Miller. "It doesn't hurt that they win so much and they are always competing for the national title. Coach Long tells me they need a great tight end so that they can start throwing the ball to the tight end again. He was telling me when they had Trent Smith, he caught about 61 passes at tight end, so that appeals to me because I think I am a good pass receiving tight end. I am giving a lot of consideration to OU and they are definitely going to be one of my final schools to decide from. Right now I would say that ASU, Oklahoma and Miami are my top three schools."
With ASU in the picture you wonder how tough it will be for Miller to leave the state?
"I don't think I will have a problem with it," said Miller. "If I feel that Oklahoma or Miami are the best schools for me then that is where I will go to school. ASU is closer to home and that is a consideration, but if I don't feel they are the best school for me then I will pick one of the other schools."
Miller has qualified.
