NORMAN, Okla. — Sophomore's Kevin Bookout and De'Angelo Alexander each recorded double-doubles as No. 7 Oklahoma improved to 9-0 with their 72-57 win over Texas-Pan American Monday night in Norman.
The win matched the Sooners' best start in the Sampson era, but OU's head coach wasn't happy with his teams' performance.
"I was pleased with Kevin Bookout, Jaison Williams and De'Angelo Alexander, but I was disappointed in the effort by the team overall," said Kelvin Sampson, who is one win away from his 400th as a head coach.
"Our guys have to understand how we got to where we are now. It wasn't by the effort put out tonight. We will work on that before Princeton. We'll learn from this."
The Sooners, who used an 8-0 run to begin the game, had hard time shaking the the Texas-Pan American for most of the night. Oklahoma led by as many as 10 points at the 13 minute mark, but the Broncs charged back and cut the Sooners' lead to 22-21 with 5:10 to go in the first half on a Ray Castillo three-pointer.
But from that point on the Sooners took control as freshmen point guard Drew Lavender scored seven points in OU's 13-2 run to close the half and give the Sooners a 37-25 lead at the break.
Texas-Pan American would start the second half with an 8-4 run to cut OU's lead to eight points, but that would be as close as they would get as the Sooners would do just enough down the stretch to keep the lead around the double digit mark.
Bookout showed he was well on his way to a full recovery from his shoulder injury with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Alexander pitched in 16 points and 10 rebounds while junior guard Jaison Williams came off the bench to add 17 points and four assists.
Senior center Jabahri Brown left the game early and played just 10 minutes in the first half after hitting the floor hard chasing a loose ball.
Brown's availability for Saturday's matchup with Princeton in the All-College Classic was unknown as of late Monday night. Tip-off for Saturday's Princeton game is set for 4 p.m. at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City.
