RECRUITING: Hairston says Sooners have a shot

Detroit, Mich. McDonald's All-American Malik Hairston talks about his visit to Norman this weekend and the Sooners chances to earn his signature.

Detroit, Mich. wing Malik Hairston talked with James Hale earlier this evening about his visit to Norman last weekend.

Hairston, who is ranked the No. 2 small forward in the country by The Insiders, is considering Ohio State, Michigan, UCLA and Kansas along with Oklahoma.

OUINSIDER: How was the visit to Oklahoma?

HAIRSTON: "It went very, very well. It was a great visit."

OUINSIDER: What did you most enjoy about your time at OU?

HAIRSTON: "Playing ball with the guys there. It's a great bunch of guys that obviously care about each other. They like to play together and they take care of one another."

OUINSIDER: Is OU a team that can win in the future?

HAIRSTON: "Without question it's a team on the rise. You're going to hear about Oklahoma a lot in the next three or four years."

OUINSIDER: If you commit to Oklahoma can they win it all?

HAIRSTON: "Yes, but they can also get it done without me. I don't want to be put in a position of being the one guy that can make it happen."

OUINSIDER: How about coach Sampson?

HAIRSTON: "Coach Sampson is exactly like what I thought he'd be like. He's a great guy that cares deeply about his players. He really knows basketball and he's a player's coach."

OUINSIDER: Did the visit enhance OU's chances?

HAIRSTON: "Yes, it cleared up some things about what Oklahoma is really like. I did not come away with any negative thoughts."

OUINSIDER: Does OU have a realistic chance to sign you?

HAIRSTON: "OU has a legitimate chance. Sure."

OUINSIDER: So what's the timetable for a decision?

HAIRSTON: "I'll sit down with my dad and my coach and we'll evaluate all the schools. I would think we'll have a ledger that we can write the pluses and minuses of each program. There has to be a systematic way to narrow this down to a choice."

OUINSIDER: So you have not eliminated any of the schools?

HAIRSTON: "All the schools I visited have a chance. I'd like to have a decision by sometime this week. But I won't have a definite day that I'm going to have to make a decision by. I would say it'll be later in the week sometime."
