AVERELL SPICER, DE, 6'2, 262, 4.68, Rancho Cucamonga, California:
Averell Spicer is one of your prototype NFL defensive end types that comes with the weight, but has enough quicks to line up outside and dominate. So, he is not a defensive tackle, he is a defensive end.
Spicer is entering his third year as a starter at defensive end, but he also doubles as a tailback and a fullback.
"It is fun to carry the ball sometimes," said Spicer. "I know in college I don't expect to play on both sides of the ball. I guess I could, but that is a little far-fetched."
Last year Spicer finished with 65 tackles, 14 sacks and six caused fumbles. On offense, Spicer managed to reach the end zone four times, but admits he didn't get many carries.
Spicer can bench 325 pounds, squats 600-plus and he has a vertical jump of 32-inches. Spicer says everybody from his area always goes to the Oregon State camp, so he is pretty sure he will be making a return appearance there.
Spicer has received 15 offers at this point and more could be on the way.
"I am trying to wait until after the season to start to narrow things down," said Spicer. "I am still looking at a number of schools and there is no team that I am counting out. I am interested in Florida State, Nebraska, USC, UCLA, Michigan, Oklahoma, LSU and Miami among many others.
"I like Oklahoma, but I don't know every much about them yet. I know they did pretty well last year and I am interested in finding out more about them."
Spicer is qualified.
