University of Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops and Athletic Director Joe Castiglione both stated Sunday, according to various media sources, that neither has been contacted by officials from Notre Dame regarding their vacant coaching position.
Stoops is believed to be on a short list of three candidates to replace Bob Davie, who was fired at a press conference Sunday in South Bend, Ind.
Castiglione said in an interview in the Monday morning edition of the Daily Oklahoman that despite the rumors of Stoops' candidacy for the position, he hasn't been contacted by any university officials from Notre Dame seeking permission from him to speak with Stoops.
"That rumor bounced around last week, and of course it came out during the season, as well," Castiglione told the Daily Oklahoman. "There's not substance to it."
Stoops said Monday during the Big 12 coaches' weekly teleconference that he has not been contacted by Notre Dame, but also said that he would speak to them if they called.
"When you answer you're phone, somebody's always on the other line," Stoops told the media during the Big 12 coaches' weekly teleconference on Monday. "It's hard not to talk to them."
Stoops, however, did go on to say that he was happy with his current position at Oklahoma.
"I've got a great administration backing us up," Stoops continued.
"I believe Oklahoma is one of the best places in America to coach or play college football, and I feel fortunate that I have the job I have," said Stoops.
"I think Oklahoma is considered one of the best jobs in the country," Castiglione told the Daily Oklahoman. "I'd really like to see who someone would place before this one. There aren't better football jobs in the country."
Oakland Raider Head Coach Jon Gruden is believed to be Notre Dame's first choice to replace Davie. Other candidates mentioned as candidates to replace Davie include: San Francisco 49er Head Coach Steve Mariucci, Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Tom Coughlin, Oregon Head Coach Mike Bellotti and Stanford Head Coach Tyrone Willingham.
