HOOPS RECRUITING: Neal says OU is a perfect fit

Junior college shooting guard Michael Neal talks about his game and his recent commitment to Oklahoma. Neal chose the Sooners over Texas, Utah, Washington and UNC Charlotte.

Michael Neal, G, 6'3, LON MORRIS JC, TEXAS:

JH: Congratulations on your commitment to OU. Why did you choose OU?

MN: "Besides the fact we are going to win, have fun and win a National Championship, it is a perfect fit for me. OU has a great coach, good coaches and a good bunch of guys. They play in a great conference, have great facilities, a great university and it is close to home. For me, OU was just the perfect situation. I really didn't have any decision to make once I took a visit to OU."

JH: How did you end up at Lon Morris?

MN: "I was born in Fort Gibson, Miss. and moved to Mesquite, Texas when I was in elementary school. I went to Poteet High School and averaged 28 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. From Poteet, I went Seminole Junior College where I got a sinus infection that spread to my brain. I ended up having brain surgery and that set me back for a while. I was then released by a new coach at Seminole and the coaching staff at Lon Morris allowed me to transfer to their program. I went junior college because that was my best offer at the time."

JH: What was the key to your great freshman season?

MN: "I think the reason I had a great season was because of my team. Our coach got us to play great defense and once we got our defense going it was easy offense for us. That helped me a lot. I averaged 20 points, five rebounds and three assist per game last season.

JH: Did you have a great post season?

MN: "In our regional tournament I averaged 18 points, and in the national tournament I averaged 31 points per game."

JH: How would you describe your game?

MN: "I come off picks and shoot a lot of mid-range jumpers and three's. I shoot a lot of three's in transition and I like to shot a lot of jumpers in transition. I can take a defender off the dribble. I like to do that because it gets me to the free throw line. I shot 50 percent from the field, 39 percent from the three-point line and 78 percent from the free throw line. I think I am a pretty good defender, and I think my defensive ability gets better with the better competition that I play."

JH: What other schools did you consider?

MN: "I also considered Washington, Utah, Texas and UNC Charlotte."
