Below are excerpts from Houston Head Coach Art Briles' weekly press conference in Houston and teleconference with the Oklahoma media.
"We have a great opportunity this week in going to OU. They are without a doubt one of the top, if not the top, Division I programs in the nation over the past five years, and it's a great opportunity for us. It's a great challenge for us, but it's also a chance for us to show our resiliency, our manhood and our competitive nature. I'm ready to get back on the field, get our guys back in focus, and then get in gear. It's going to be a great environment, a great atmosphere for us to showcase the University of Houston to the nation."
On the mindset going in to play Oklahoma after their disappointing loss to Rice
"You have to show what you're made of every week. This is an opportunity for us to go up against one of the best teams in the nation and to see where we stack up right now. It's not an easy task, as what has beren evident by the last five years with those who have played them (Oklahoma). But it's one challenge that is in front of us. And we're going to go up there and handle it as champions, and as competitors."
On what happened to their offense against Rice
"We'll find it. I don't know. We're still kind of wondering ourselves. We'll just feel kinda through the process and try to improve in an area or two each week to get to where we can develop some kind of consistency."
On what they like to do offensively
"A lot of run-pass options. We have a lot of two-back. We'd like to be able to run the football. We didn't do very well the other day, but we'd like to be able to run the football on people."
On how much their offense resembles Texas Tech
"We really don't do much of what they do. We're really a different style offense. They do a great job of what they do though."
On why he likes the spread offense
"When it works you can create some running lanes and passing lanes. You can get the defense maybe to give you this or that. I'm just like anybody else, I'd rather line up and be able to just pound it up and down the field and make four yards a crack. But that's just hard to do these days."
On if he calls his offense 'the spread'
"Not really. I don't know what I call it, but I don't know if 'spread' would be the correct term. Believe it or not, we were actually 12th in the nation in rushing last year. I don't think that qualifies into a spread offense. I'll just say multiple, mixed."
On spreading the field to get the running lanes open
"We try. Our damper is a little bit dull right now. We're not feeling overly confident on anything right now. We're just trying to grind out a yard or two."
On the key players on offense
"Our offensive line. As they go, we go. They play well up front, then we're going to move the ball. If we have breakdowns, then we're not going to move it as well."
On what caused the struggle last week against Rice
"There are a lot of problems, beginning with me. That's where we'll start it and end it."
