RECRUITING: Sooner coaches hit the road

Alief, Texas tight end Martellus Bennett talks about his in-home visit with OU and much, much more.

The Oklahoma coaches have been on the road this week for in-home visits and they are very good in what they do. I haven't talked to a high school coach or a recruit who hasn't been incredibly impressed with OU. In many ways, I guess you can't expect them to say anything negative about the OU coaches, but they don't have to go out of their way to say anything good either, which they certainly do.

The Sooners had a great in-home visit with tight end Martellus Bennett of Alief (Taylor HS), Texas. OU is still very much in the running for Bennett.

"Coach Kevin Sumlin and Coach Jackie Shipp came by to see earlier this week and I really enjoyed the visit," said Bennett. "I like both of them and both shoot the truth with me when they talk. Coach Sumlin is the tight end coach at OU and I would enjoy playing for him. I could benefit from playing for him. Coach Shipp is a great guy. My last visit is going to be to Miami, and then I am going to decide between OU, Texas and Miami. I don't know where I am going to go right now, but yes, Oklahoma is one of my top schools."

OU is still talking to DajLeon Farr of Galena Park (North Shore HS), Texas despite the fact that he has committed to LSU. I don't know if OU can turn his commitment or not, but he continues to encourage OU to call.

It is amazing that the Sooners have managed to get in on and stay in on the top down down linemen out of Minnesota. Offensive lineman Rafeal Eubanks and defensive tackle Walker Ashley will visit OU next weekend and both indicate that the Sooners have a real shot. Coach Sumlin coached at the University of Minnesota for five years and the contacts that he developed with the Minnesota high school coaches are paying off.

Sumlin has coached in a lot of different areas and he has not burned a bridge anywhere. I would guess he is one of the most popular assistant coaches in the country, and that pays off in recruiting for him. Sumlin and Jackie Shipp are also teaming up on Houston, Texas offensive lineman Reginald Youngblood. And I have to throw Kevin Wilson in here as well and OU has a great chance to sign the top OL in Texas.

OU Head Coach Bob Stoops did a great job in the home of Greenbelt, Maryland athlete Derrick Williams who visits this weekend. OU has a very solid shot at signing Williams, who will also visit Texas next weekend. This is going to come down to an OU/Florida decision. New Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer made a smart move by keeping the wide receiver coach on Ron Zook's staff on his staff. That coach has been recruiting Williams and the fact that Coach Meyer kept him on the staff has kept Florida very much in the hunt. I don't think Texas is going to be a serious factor, and this will come down to the Sooners and the Gators.

The key for Williams is how comfortable he feels at OU this weekend. OU does a great job on their visits and I like their chances here. After the visit to Texas, the Williams family will sit down and make a decision. Williams graduates this semester and he wants to make a decision before the Christmas holiday. Don't be surprised if he chooses OU and if he doesn't make the Orange Bowl trip with the Sooners as OU tries to get him adjusted to college football in a hurry.

OU Co-Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables had a great in-home with linebacker Lamont Robinson out of Salem, N.J.

"It was great to finally meet Coach Venables," said Robinson. "He is a great guy and an even better coach. I just think he is one of the best coaches in the country. He always produces some of the best linebacker corps in the country. Because of him and the great tradition at OU, I am very interested in OU."

Coach Wilson had a very good in-home with Cory Zirbel who insists that he is not leaning to Michigan and that OU has a real shot. He said he told Coach Wilson that to and we will find out this weekend after he visits Michigan.

It will also be judgment weekend for Wilson with offensive lineman Dan Doering out of Chicago (Barrington HS), Illinois. This has come down to and OU/Iowa battle and he visits Iowa this week. So, OU is in the top two for both Doering and Zirbel and the Sooners top contenders in both cases get visits with the prospect this week. Wow!
