The OU Women's Basketball team is making it very hard on themselves to get into the NCAA Tournament. The Sooners watched 14th-ranked Texas Tech shoot a blistering 61.5 percent in the first half to take a 43-27 halftime lead and hang on for an 83-70 win Wednesday night in Norman.
Texas Tech shot only 50 percent in the second half, but Oklahoma stayed cold in the second half, hitting just 12 of their 31 shot attempts. The Sooners shot just 39 percent from the field for the game.
Despite a gallant effort by OU senior Dionnah Jackson, who scored a game-high 23 points, the Sooners couldn't get any closer than nine in the second half.
Leah Rush only played 23 minutes because of foul trouble, but still managed 11 points. Senior Lauren Shoush was the only other Sooner in double digits with 10. Texas Tech won the rebounding battle 34-30.
With the loss, OU falls to 15-10 overall and 7-7 in the league, while Texas Tech improved to 20-5 and 11-3. OU is on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament and they are currently in seventh place in the Big 12.
Will the NCAA Tournament take seven teams from the Big 12? Coach Sherri Coale is very confident her Sooners will get in.
"We will be in the NCAA Tournament," said Coale after the game. "You have to look at our strength of schedule, win over Kansas State — a top 15 program — and our tough losses to Texas and Texas Tech, who are both ranked in the top 15 in the country. There is still a lot of basketball to be played and we are going to pick up some more wins."
A year ago, the NCAA took seven teams from the Big 12 as Missouri got into the tournament with a losing conference record. OU will be an underdog at Texas on Saturday, and then they close out their season at OSU on March 3rd.
OU Athletic Director Joe Castiglione said after the game he felt that if the Sooners could split the next two games and then win two in the Big 12 Tournament they would get into the NCAA Tournament. Castiglione has been on NCAA basketball selection committees many times, and I trust his judgment totally.
The game was final home game for senior's Jackson and Shoush.
