RECRUITING: Texas LB favors five schools

Did Oklahoma make the cut for Haltom City, Texas LB Anthony Lewis?

Anthony Lewis is one of those fantastic players that many will argue is the best at his position. Blessed with great size and speed, Lewis plays the game with a passion that only the great one's possess.

Lewis goes into his senior season a three-year starter at middle linebacker, and he also dabbles on offense at wingback. Lewis finished last season with 137 tackles, five sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and three fumbles recovered.

"I think I just play with more heart that most players," said Lewis. "I just try to give it everything that I have on every play and I try to get to the ball as fast as I can."

Lewis can bench 315 pounds, squats 520 and he has a 35 ½ vertical jump. Lewis hasn't attended any camps, but he has taken unofficial visits this spring to Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Missouri, and most recently to OU.

"I really enjoyed my visit to OU. I felt real comfortable there," said Lewis. "I had a chance to meet Coach Bob Stoops and I got a chance to talk to my linebacker coach (Brent) Venables. I also like their defense because it is similar to what we run at Haltom. I also feel very comfortable at Texas A&M. They seem to be very sincere honest people."

Lewis has been offered by Georgia Tech, Florida, Missouri, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, OU, Purdue, Oklahoma State, Rice and Washington State.

"Right now I am looking at Texas A&M, Oklahoma, OSU, Washington State and Wisconsin as my top five," said Lewis. "I don't have a favorite out of that group, but that is a pretty consistent top five for me. I am going to be looking for a comfortable living environment because that is where I am going to be living for the next five years.

"I will also look closely at the chemistry of the coaches with their players and how the team gets along on and off the field. I am not that concerned about depth chart because I feel I am talented enough that it will all work out in the end."

Lewis says he will be looking at attend a couple of camps this summer, but he isn't sure where at this time. Lewis has already qualified.
