The Oklahoma baseball team played their worst game of the year losing to Lamar, 8-4, in the first game of a three-game series at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
The Sooners committed five errors on the day and one major base running mistake that basically gave the game to the Cardinals.
Rocky Cherry started and didn't help his own cause. Cherry committed two throwing errors on throws to firstbase on comebackers. Cherry struck out six through 5 2/3 innings, but his own mistakes defensively, and that of his teammates were to much to overcome. Cherry gave up seven runs, but none of them were earned.
In the first inning leftfielder Jason Fransz dropped a fly ball that cost the Sooners an out. A walk and that error eventually lead to three runs for the Cardinals.
In the sixth, the Cardinals took advantage of throwing errors by Cherry and second baseman Eddie Cornejo. With two outs, Cherry was removed and prized freshman David Purcey gave up a bases clearing triple and the Sooners were down 7-1.
In the eight, the Sooners got their first two runners on base, but on a ground ball to first the Sooners were caught with two runners on third base and what should have been just one out turned into two and the Sooners wasted a golden opportunity to score.
The Sooners battled back in the ninth. With two outs, pinch-hitter Luke Alexander hit a triple to right center. Lead off man Reggie Willits followed with an RBI double and was then drove in on an RBI single by Cornejo. However, that was all the Sooners could come up in the ninth.
Chris Jakubauskas hit a solo homer for the Sooners, his third long ball of the season. Freshman third baseman Matt Bose had a double and an RBI single in the game. Fransz had two doubles and scored a run.
The Sooners are now 5-2 on the year, while Lamar improved to 6-5. Senior righthander Evan Greusel is scheduled to be the Sooner starter on Saturday. Game time set for 1:00 p.m. at Dale Mitchell.
The game will be carried by KREF 1400 AM starting with the pregame at 12:45 p.m., and the game will be on the web, provided by OU.
