RECRUITING: Could Washington be commit No. 2?

Is Destrehan, La. defensive tackle Chaz Washington on the verge of making a commitment? See what the 6-foot-3, 288-pounder with offers from LSU, Auburn, Florida State, Miami, USC and others says about the Sooners' chances to land him.

Since our last conversation with Chaz Washington on April 20, it has been apparent that he was close to committing to Oklahoma. At this time, Washington has given the Sooners a soft commitment, but because he is going to take other visits OU won't count him as a solid commitment, so neither will we.

However, you will be able to tell in this interview that OU is in a solid position with Washington at this point, but they have not totally closed the door.

JH: Has Oklahoma been by to see you yet this week?

CW: "Coach Wilson and Coach Shipp are coming out to see me on Thursday I think."

JH: What are your thoughts on Oklahoma at this time?

CW: "I am going to commit to OU at the end of spring football, which is on May the 20th."

JH: You still to like Oklahoma a great deal. What are the key reasons?

CW: "I love everything about the Oklahoma program. I love the coaches that are recruiting me, and I would love to play for a head coach like Coach (Bob) Stoops. He is a great coach and it would be an honor to play for him."

JH: Are you going to tell all other schools that you are committed to OU?

CW: "Yes, at the end of spring football I will tell all the other schools that I am going to Oklahoma. I have talked to my parents about it and they are OK with it. Oklahoma is where I want to play my college football and they are No. 1 in my mind right now.

JH: Is Oklahoma going to be the only other school that you visit?

CW: "I still want to take a couple of visits. I want to visit Miami and UCLA. I have been to Miami already, but I didn't get to see everything. I didn't get to see the academic center and didn't get to see all the facilities.

"I am going to give Oklahoma a verbal commitment and they are a solid No. 1 with me right now. I plan on going to Oklahoma's summer camp, and I am supposed to go the Miami and UCLA camps as well. That would give me a chance to compare the three schools. They are the top three schools in my mind right now, with OU the solid No. 1.

"I want to compare their depth chart at defensive tackle, how many guys are graduating within their program and how many guys they are putting in the pros. The way I feel right now nobody can beat Oklahoma."
