Sooners take first game from Texas Tech

Freshman catcher Jackson Williams' bases loaded single helps Sooners knock off Tech, 6-3.

Sooner pitcher Daniel McCutchen struck out nine Red Raiders and the OU offense scored three runs in the eighth to overcome a three-run deficit and knock off Texas Tech 6-3 Friday in Norman.

The Red Raiders scored three runs in the third to take an early 3-0 lead, but Oklahoma bounced back with runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game.

In the eighth, freshman catcher Jackson Williams helped give OU in the lead for good when his bases loaded single to left field knocked in two Sooners.

Super reliever Will Savage, who has given up just one earned run in his last 15 innings, replaced McCuthchen in the ninth and recorded his third save of the season.

McCutchen, now 3-5 on the season, gave up three runs on six hits in eight solid innings.

With the win, the Sooners improve to 31-22 overall and 12-13 in Big 12 play. Tech falls to 33-21 and 9-14 in conference action.

The Sooners and Red Raiders will meet in game two at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman. Sooner left-hander Garrett Paterson (5-2, 3.46 ERA) will start for the Sooners against Tech righty Tanner McElroy (2-2, 2.13 ERA).
