RECRUITING: Top Texas corner favors three

Houston, Texas CB Chykie Brown update.

You have to possess make-up speed to play corner in college and pro football, and Chykie Brown has the blazing speed (4.39) to do just that. If a receiver makes a move on him at the line of scrimmage, he has the speed to close the gap.

"My speed has always been my best friend, "said Brown. "I match-up against some good receivers in Houston and at times they do get a step on me, but they never get too far ahead of me because I have enough closing speed to make up the ground."

Brown started for the first time last season at cornerback and finished the year with 29 total tackles (nine solo), one interception and nine pass break-ups.

"After teams found out that I could cover pretty well they didn't test me much or throw my way very often," said Brown. "I love playing corner because you have a chance to shut down their go-to guy and totally change the game around."

Brown can bench 210 pounds, squats 340 and he set the vertical jump record at the Houston combine with a jump of 40.5 inches. Brown also starts at shooting guard in on the basketball team where he averages 13 points per game. In track, Brown runs the 100M (10.5) and 200M (21.8 ) dash.

The only combine that Brown has ever attended was the one at Houston, and he hopes to go back to Houston for their one-day camp and to the LSU one-day camp.

Brown has been offered by Arizona, Oklahoma State, Texas, LSU and Oklahoma.

"I want to go to a school where I can get on the field my freshman year," said Brown. "My top three schools are USC, UT and LSU. USC hasn't offered me yet, but they watched my spring game and have indicated they are considering offering me. Oklahoma is another good school that I like. I am going to take a visit there, so they will be in the mix as well."

Brown has his GPA and he is awaiting scores on his ACT.
